Instagram private replies: how to reply to comments in DM

Instagram private replies let you reply to Instagram comments in DM. You can send one private reply per comment, within 7 days, and the person must answer before you can send more.

What a private reply is

When someone comments on your post or reel, you can answer in two ways. A public reply appears under the comment, where everyone can read it. A private reply goes to the person’s DMs, where only they see it.

Private replies are what make “comment to DM” work. A creator writes: “Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the link.” Each person who comments “guide” gets the link in a DM.

People get what they asked for in their DMs. You get a chance to start a conversation, without filling your comments with the same answer again and again.

The rules for private replies

Meta sets clear rules for private replies. Here they are, one by one.

One private reply per comment

Each comment allows one private reply. A second private reply to the same comment fails. If the person comments again, that new comment allows a new private reply.

Within 7 days of the comment

You have 7 days from the time of the comment. After that, Instagram refuses the reply. An automation that answers right away is far inside this limit.

A comment does not open the 24-hour window

A comment is not a message, so it does not open the normal 24-hour messaging window. Your private reply does not open it either. Until the person answers, that one DM is all you can send.

More messages only after the person replies

When the person answers your private reply, the normal 24-hour window opens. You can then message them for 24 hours after their last message. Our guide to the Instagram 24-hour messaging window explains how it works.

Live comments: only during the broadcast

You can send private replies to comments on Instagram Live, but only while the live broadcast is running. After it ends, you cannot send a private reply to those comments.

Non-followers may find it in message requests

If the person does not follow your account, your reply can land in their message requests, not their main inbox. They may not see it there right away.

A worked example

You post a reel about a new linen dress. The caption says: “Comment PRICE and I’ll send you the details.” Here is what happens when Ana comments.

Ana’s comment, step by step
WhenWhat happensYou can send
Mon 10:00Ana comments “price” under your reel. One private reply, within 7 days
Mon 10:00Your automation sends a private reply with the price, a link and a question.Nothing more until Ana answers
Mon 10:20Ana answers your DM: “Do you have it in M?”Messages until Tue 10:20
Mon 10:25You reply by hand: “Yes, M is in stock.”Messages until Tue 10:20
Wed 15:00Ana comments “price” on a different post. One private reply to the new comment

If Ana had not answered, your private reply would have been the only message you could send her. Her answer is what opened the 24-hour window.

How to write a private reply that works

You get one message, so make it count. Send what people asked for, such as a price, a product link, a booking page or a free guide. Then follow three habits.

Put everything in one message

Include the answer, the link and any detail the person needs. You cannot send a second message until they reply. The limit is 1,000 bytes per message. That is about 1,000 English letters, but fewer with emoji, because most emoji take 4 bytes each.

Give one clear next step

Tell people exactly what to do next, such as “Tap the link to order” or “Reply with your size”. One step is easier to follow than three.

End with a question

A question invites an answer, and an answer opens the 24-hour window. “Which size do you need?” starts a conversation. “Thanks!” ends it.

Example private reply

“Hi Ana! The linen dress costs €49 and comes in sizes XS to XL. Order here: shop.example/linen-dress. Which size do you need?”

It answers the question, gives one link and ends with a question. It also fits easily in 1,000 bytes.

What goes wrong

A second reply to the same comment fails

Each comment allows one private reply. If two tools answer the same comment, the second reply fails. Use one tool for comment replies.

Replies after 7 days fail

A private reply to a comment older than 7 days fails. So a new automation on an old post cannot answer comments from more than 7 days ago.

Test replies use up the one reply

If you test your automation on a real customer’s comment, your test message becomes that comment’s private reply. You cannot send a better one afterwards. Test with comments from a second account you own.

People miss replies in message requests

Non-followers may find your reply in message requests. Say so in your caption: “Comment PRICE, then check your DMs and message requests.”

Live replies after the broadcast

Private replies to Live comments work only while the broadcast is running. Answer Live comments during the Live, not after it.

How DM Flow handles private replies

Comment to DM in DM Flow is built on private replies. You choose the posts, add keywords and write the message. DM Flow checks the rules and sends the reply.

  • Automations on the posts you choose. Listen on one post or reel, on several, or on all of them with “Any post or reel”.
  • One private reply per comment. When a comment contains your keyword, DM Flow sends one private reply with your message.
  • The 7-day limit, checked first. DM Flow checks the 7-day limit before it sends a private reply.
  • No double replies. Instagram sometimes sends the same notification twice. DM Flow never sends twice when that happens.
  • Paced sending. Meta’s documentation lists a limit of 750 private replies per hour on posts and reels. DM Flow sends at most 700 per hour per account, so it stays under that limit. If a post gets more keyword comments than that, the extra replies wait their turn and go out within the 7 days.
  • A byte counter and a preview. The editor counts bytes for you and shows a live phone preview of the DM.
  • The conversation continues in one inbox. When people answer, the chat is in your Instagram DM inbox with the time left to reply. Keyword auto-replies can answer their next questions.

DM Flow sends private replies only. It does not post public replies under comments.
