Instagram DM automation guides

These Instagram DM automation guides show how to set up auto replies and comment to DM, explain Meta’s messaging rules and compare the tools, in plain English. Each one answers one question, walks through an example and links to its sources.

The rules in one minute

Short on time? These five rules cover the basics. Each one links to the full explanation.

  1. 01The 24-hour windowYou can message a person for 24 hours after their last message. Each new message from them restarts the 24 hours.
  2. 02Private repliesA comment allows one private reply, within 7 days. It does not open the 24-hour window.
  3. 03No cold messagesYou can message only people who wrote to you or commented first. No lists, no strangers.
  4. 04Official API onlyUse a tool on Instagram’s official API. Tools that log in with your password break Instagram’s terms.
  5. 05Message lengthEach message can be at most 1,000 bytes. Most emoji take 4 bytes each.
