What happens after someone comments

Instagram calls this DM a private reply. Here is one comment, from start to finish.

    At 10:00 on Monday, Ana writes “price?” under your reel. It contains your keyword, “price”.

    DM Flow sends one DM

    DM Flow sends Ana your prices in a private reply. Instagram allows one for each comment.

  3. Her answer

    Ana writes back

    At 10:05, Ana answers your DM: “Do you ship to Pune?”

  4. 24-hour window

    You can chat

    Her answer opens the 24-hour window. You can reply until 10:05 on Tuesday, and each new message from her restarts it.

Setup

Set up comment to DM in six steps

Set it up once. DM Flow then answers matching comments for you, day and night.

    Connect Instagram

    Sign in with Google. Then connect your Business or Creator account through Instagram’s official login.

    Choose “Comment on a post”

    Create an automation and pick “Comment on a post” as the trigger.

  3. 3

    Pick posts or reels

    Leave “Any post or reel” on to listen everywhere, new posts included. Or turn it off and choose the posts.

  4. 4

    Add keywords

    Add the words people will comment, such as “price”, “link” or “guide”.

  5. 5

    Write the DM

    Write one clear message. The live phone preview shows it as people will see it.

    Go Live

    Publish with the switch on Live. You can pause, edit or duplicate the automation at any time.

Why a question helps

A comment does not open Instagram’s 24-hour window. Your private reply is one message. When the person answers it, the window opens and you can keep talking. Learn how the 24-hour window works.

Instagram’s rules

The limits Instagram sets for private replies

These rules come from Instagram, not from DM Flow. DM Flow checks the 7-day limit and the 24-hour window before every send.

One private reply per comment

Each comment allows one DM, sent within 7 days of the comment.

A comment does not open the window

Only a message from the person opens the 24-hour window. Their answer to your DM does that.

Non-followers may see it in requests

If the person does not follow you, your DM can land in their message requests.

Live comments only during the Live

Private replies to Live comments work only while the broadcast runs. DM Flow listens on posts and reels.

Tips

Keywords and messages that work

A good keyword is easy to type and hard to use by accident. A good DM is short and asks for one thing.

Choosing keywords

  • price
  • link
  • guide
  • size
  • menu
  • recipe
  • book
  • Say the keyword in your caption or video: “Comment GUIDE for the link.”
  • Add other words for the same thing, like “price”, “cost” and “how much”.
  • Avoid very common words. “Love” or “hi” would match many comments that are not requests.

Writing the DM

  • Send one clear message. You get one private reply per comment, so make it count.
  • Stay under 1,000 bytes, the limit Instagram sets. Most emoji use 4 bytes, and DM Flow’s editor counts bytes for you.
  • Give one next step: a link to tap or a question to answer.
  • Say that the message is automated where the law requires it, for example in California or Germany.

Does comment to DM work on reels?

Yes. An automation can listen on one post or reel, on several, or on all of them. With “Any post or reel” on, it also covers the posts you share later.

Can I send more than one DM to someone who commented?

Instagram allows one private reply per comment. If the person answers it, the 24-hour window opens and you can keep talking. Keyword auto-replies can then answer their next questions.

Does DM Flow also reply publicly under the comment?

No. DM Flow sends the private reply only. It does not post public replies under comments.

What if the person does not follow me?

They still get your DM, but it can land in their message requests. A clear first line helps them open it.

Can I DM all my followers or people who liked a post?

No. Instagram lets a business message only people who wrote to it first or commented. The official API does not allow cold DMs.

Is comment to DM allowed on Instagram?

Yes. Private replies are part of Instagram’s official messaging API. DM Flow uses that API and Instagram’s official login. Read the Instagram DM automation rules to stay safe.
