Instagram comment auto reply: 3 ways to set it up
Instagram comment auto reply means an automation answers comments for you, in the person’s DMs or under the comment. You can do it with Meta’s free Business Suite, with a comment-to-DM tool such as DM Flow, or with a tool that also posts public replies.

Public reply or private reply
When someone comments on your post or reel, you can answer in two places. A public reply sits under the comment, where everyone can read it. A private reply goes to the person’s DMs, where only they see it.
Most comment automation sends private replies. People comment a word like “price” or “link”, and the answer arrives in their DMs. Your comments stay easy to read, and you start a real conversation.
| Public reply | Private reply | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Under the comment, on the post | In the person’s DMs |
| Who sees it | Everyone who reads the comments | Only the person who commented |
| Opens the 24-hour window | No | No. The person’s answer does. |
| Sent by DM Flow | No | Yes, when the comment has your keyword |
The 3 ways at a glance
The three ways differ in what they send, where you set them up and how much control you get. Instagram’s rules for comment replies are the same for all of them.
| Way | What it sends | Where you set it up | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Business Suite: Comment to message | A message reply to comments with your keywords or phrases | Meta Business Suite, on desktop | Trying comment replies for free |
| DM Flow: comment to DM | One private reply to each comment with your keyword | DM Flow, in your browser | Flexible keyword matching on one, several or all posts, and an inbox that shows the time left to reply |
| A tool with public replies, such as ManyChat | A public reply under the comment | That tool | Public replies or multi-step flows. See ManyChat’s plans. |
Way 1: Meta Business Suite “Comment to message” (free)
Meta Business Suite has a free automation called Comment to message. It sends a message reply to comments on your posts that contain the keywords or phrases you choose.
It works for Instagram business accounts connected to Meta Business Suite. It is available only in Meta Business Suite on desktop, not in the mobile app.
How to set it up
- Open Meta Business Suite on a computer and choose your business portfolio.
- Go to Inbox, then click Automations.
- Click Create automation, then choose Comment to message.
- Follow the steps on the screen and turn the automation on.
What to know before you rely on it
- It works on desktop only.
- Meta says some automations may not be available, depending on which channels you have connected.
- Meta also notes that some organic messaging features are not available for businesses in Europe and Japan.
- Meta’s keyword replies to DMs follow strict rules: up to five keywords per automation, exact matching where capitals count, and a 15-minute wait unless you answer first. Our guide on how to set up auto reply on Instagram covers them.
If you have one account and a few posts, this free option may be all you need.
Way 2: comment to DM with DM Flow
DM Flow answers comments with a private reply. When a comment contains your keyword, the person gets one DM with your message. Here is how Instagram comment to DM works in DM Flow.
Set it up in 6 steps
- Sign in to DM Flow with Google. Connect your Instagram Business or Creator account through Instagram’s official login.
- Go to Automations and click New automation. For the trigger, choose Comment on a post. You can also open Posts and click Add automation on a post.
- Choose posts: pick one post or reel, or several. Or turn on Any post or reel to listen on every post, including the ones you share later.
- Add keywords, such as “price”, “link” or “guide”. Choose the match: Contains the keyword, Is exactly the keyword, or Starts with the keyword. Capitals do not count unless you tick Match capitalisation exactly.
- Write the reply. The editor counts bytes against Instagram’s limit of 1,000 and shows a live phone preview.
- Check that the switch says Live, then click Publish. Test it with a comment from a second account you own.
When someone answers your DM, the chat is in your Instagram DM inbox, with a ring that shows the time left to reply. Keyword auto-replies can answer their next questions.
What DM Flow checks before every reply
- The 7-day limit. DM Flow checks it before it sends a private reply.
- Unsubscribed contacts and disconnected accounts. DM Flow checks both before it sends.
- No double replies. Instagram sometimes sends the same notification twice. DM Flow never sends twice when that happens.
- Paced sending. Meta’s documentation lists a limit of 750 private replies per hour on posts and reels. DM Flow sends at most 700 per hour per account. Extra replies wait their turn and go out within the 7 days.
- No waiting period. DM Flow adds no delay of its own. It sends as soon as these checks pass.
Way 3: public replies under comments
Meta Business Suite’s comment automation sends a message, not a public reply. Some tools, such as ManyChat, can post a public reply under the comment. DM Flow does not: it answers comments with a private reply only.
A public reply shows other people that you answer, but the conversation happens in the DM. If the DM is what matters to you, one line in your caption does the same job: “Comment PRICE and check your DMs.”
If you need public replies, multi-step flows or many channels, ManyChat is the better fit. Our ManyChat alternative page compares the two tools honestly.
The rules every tool must follow
Whichever way you choose, the rules are the same. They come from Instagram, not from the tool.
- One private reply per comment. A second private reply to the same comment fails.
- Within 7 days. After 7 days, Instagram refuses the private reply.
- A comment does not open the 24-hour window. You can send more messages only after the person answers. Their answer opens the window. See how the Instagram 24-hour window works.
- Instagram Live. You can send private replies to Live comments only while the broadcast is running.
- Message requests. If the person does not follow you, your reply can land in their message requests.
- Public accounts only. Instagram tells apps about new comments only when the account that owns the post is public.
- 1,000 bytes per message. Most emoji take 4 bytes, so a message with emoji fits fewer letters.
Our guide to Instagram private replies explains each rule with examples.
A worked example
Maya runs a pottery studio. She posts a reel with the caption: “Comment CLASS for dates and prices. Then check your DMs.” Her DM Flow automation listens on the reel for the keyword “class”, with Contains the keyword.
| When | What happens | Maya can send |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 18:10 | Leo comments: “Is there a class on Saturday?” | One private reply to this comment |
| Next | DM Flow sends Leo one DM with the dates, the price, a booking link and a question. | Nothing more until Leo answers |
| Tue 18:40 | Leo answers the DM: “Saturday, please!” | Messages until Wed 18:40 |
| Tue 18:45 | Maya replies by hand. DM Flow pauses automation in that chat for 1 hour. | Messages until Wed 18:40 |
| Wed 09:00 | Priya comments “CLASS”. Capitals do not count, so she gets the DM too. | One private reply to this comment |
If Leo had not answered, the private reply would have been the only message Maya could send him. His answer opened the 24-hour window.
Reply templates that start conversations
You get one message per comment, so put everything in it and end with a question. A question invites an answer, and the answer opens the 24-hour window.
For a price
“Hi! The linen tote costs €39 and comes in sand and olive. Order here: shop.example/tote. Which colour do you like?”
For a link or a free guide
“Here is your free packing checklist: example.com/checklist. Are you packing for a beach trip or a city trip?”
For a booking
“Thanks for asking! Saturday classes start at 10:00 and cost €45. Book here: example.com/book. Is this your first pottery class?”
Each template answers the question, gives one link and ends with a question. Each one also fits easily in 1,000 bytes. To build a full “comment for the link” setup, follow our Instagram comment for link guide.
Mistakes to avoid
Testing on a customer’s comment
Your test DM becomes that comment’s only private reply, and you cannot send a better one later. Test with a comment from a second account you own.
Two tools answering the same comments
Each comment allows one private reply, so the second tool’s reply fails. Use one tool for comment replies on each post.
Expecting replies to old comments
Instagram refuses private replies to comments older than 7 days. No automation can answer those comments.
Keywords that are too short
With Contains the keyword, a short keyword matches too much: “hi” also matches “this”. Use a clear word such as “price”, or choose Is exactly the keyword.
A private account
Instagram does not tell apps about comments when the account that owns the post is private. Make sure your account is public.
