How the Instagram 24-hour messaging window works

The Instagram 24-hour messaging window is the time a business has to send messages after a person writes. It lasts 24 hours from the person’s last message, and every new message from them restarts it.

What the 24-hour messaging window is

Instagram limits when a business can send a direct message. The limit is a window of time. A message from the person opens it, and it stays open for 24 hours after their last message.

While the window is open, you can answer as often as you need. When it closes, you cannot send a normal message until the person writes to you again.

The window is a rule of Instagram’s messaging API, which every automation tool must use. It covers automated replies and the replies you type in a tool such as DM Flow. Instagram enforces it: a message sent outside the window fails.

What opens and restarts the window

Only the person can open the window. These count:

  • A direct message. When someone sends you a DM, the window opens for 24 hours.
  • A reply to your story. It arrives in your DMs as a message, so it opens the window too.
  • Each new message after that. Every message from the person restarts the 24 hours from the moment it arrives.

Your own messages do not move the window. If you send three messages in a row, the window still closes 24 hours after the person’s last message.

A comment does not open the window

A comment allows one private reply: a DM in answer to that comment. The private reply does not open the window either. The window opens only when the person answers your DM. Our guide to Instagram private replies explains the details.

A worked example

Ana follows a clothing shop on Instagram. At 10:00 on Monday, she sends a DM: “Is the blue dress still in stock?” Here is how the window moves.

Ana’s 24-hour messaging window over 48 hoursAna writes at hour 0, which opens the window until hour 24. She writes again at hour 8, which restarts the 24 hours, so the window stays open until hour 32. From hour 32 to hour 48 the window is closed.24 hours24 hours, restartedAna writes · Mon 10:00Ana writes again · Mon 18:00Window openClosed0 h8 h16 h24 h32 h40 h48 h
Ana’s first message opens the window until hour 24. Her second message, at hour 8, restarts the 24 hours. The window now stays open until hour 32: Tuesday at 18:00.

Ana’s first message opens the window until 10:00 on Tuesday. At 18:00 on Monday she writes again, so the window now runs until 18:00 on Tuesday. Her second message gave the shop eight more hours.

Two things stand out. The shop’s own replies never moved the deadline. And Ana’s story reply on Wednesday opened a new window, because it arrived as a DM.

What you can send inside the window

While the window is open, you can send normal messages. Answer questions, share prices and send links. You can send more than one message, and you can mix automated replies with replies you type.

You can send text and links, and Instagram’s messaging API also supports media such as audio and video. Sending has rate limits, but normal accounts never reach them. Our guide to Instagram DM automation rules lists the numbers.

Each text message can be up to 1,000 bytes. A byte is not always one character:

  • Plain English letters, digits and spaces take 1 byte each. An English message can be about 1,000 characters long.
  • Many non-Latin letters take 2 or 3 bytes each.
  • Most emoji take 4 bytes each, so a message of only emoji fits at most 250 of them.

What happens after the window closes

When the 24 hours run out, a normal message fails. Instagram does not deliver it and returns an error to the tool that sent it. The person sees nothing.

You then have three options.

1. Wait for the person to write again

Their next DM opens a new 24-hour window. So does a reply to your story. This is why the last message you send inside the window matters: a clear question gives the person a reason to answer.

2. Reply by hand with the human agent tag

Meta allows one exception for human support. A person on your team may reply up to 7 days after the person’s last message, using the HUMAN_AGENT tag.

Two conditions apply. It needs Meta’s approval: the Human Agent permission, granted in App Review. And a person must write and send the reply. The tag is for human support only, so automated messages cannot use it.

3. Send a private reply to a new comment

If the person comments on one of your posts again, you can send one private reply to that new comment, within 7 days. If they answer it, a new 24-hour window opens. A comment you already answered does not allow a second private reply.

Common mistakes

Drip messages after 24 hours

A drip sequence sends one message now, another tomorrow and a third in three days. On Instagram, the later messages fail if the person has not written since. Any follow-up must arrive within 24 hours of the person’s last message.

“Broadcasts” to old contacts

A broadcast sends one message to many people at once. Only people whose window is still open can receive it. For everyone else, the message fails. A broadcast cannot win back people who wrote to you last month.

Tools that do not check the window

Some tools send first and deal with errors later. Messages fail in the background, and you believe the customer got an answer. A good tool checks the window before every send and shows you which chats are still open.

Answering by hand too late

A question that arrives at 20:00 on Friday can wait until 20:00 on Saturday, and no longer. If nobody answers by then, you must wait for the person to write again. Check your open chats at least once a day.

How to design automations around the window

Good automations work with the window, not against it. These habits help:

  • End your DM with a question. For example: “Want the size guide too?” If the person answers, their reply restarts the 24 hours.
  • Put everything important in the first message. Give the price, the link and the next step. A follow-up may never be allowed.
  • Let automation answer common questions. A keyword auto-reply answers “price?” or “do you ship?” without waiting for you.
  • Make comment replies start a conversation. A private reply does not open the window, so ask a question in it. With comment to DM, the person’s answer opens the window.
  • Take over before time runs out. Answer the questions automation cannot handle while the window is still open.

Example: a DM that invites a reply

“Hi Ana! The blue dress is in stock in S, M and L. It costs €49, and you can order here: shop.example/blue-dress. Which size should I keep for you?”

The question at the end gives Ana a reason to reply. Her reply restarts the window.

How DM Flow handles the window

DM Flow’s Instagram DM automation is built around the 24-hour window. It shows you the time left and checks the window before every message.

  • A window ring on every conversation. In the DM Flow inbox, a ring on each chat shows the time left to reply. It empties as the 24 hours run out.
  • Window status for every contact. The contacts list shows whose window is open, so you know who you can still answer.
  • A check before every send. DM Flow checks each message against the window before it goes out. This covers automated replies and the replies you type.
  • A clear reason instead of a failed message. If the window is closed, DM Flow blocks your reply and tells you why.
  • The 7-day limit for comments. DM Flow also checks the 7-day private-reply limit before it answers a comment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a comment open the 24-hour window?

No. A comment allows one private reply, sent within 7 days of the comment. The window opens only when the person answers that DM.

Does my reply restart the 24 hours?

No. Only a new message from the person restarts the window. Your own replies, automated or typed by hand, do not change it.

Does a story reply open the window?

Yes. A reply to your story arrives in your DMs as a message. It opens the 24-hour window like any other DM.

What happens if I send a message after 24 hours?

Instagram does not deliver it. It returns an error to the tool that sent it, and the person sees nothing. A good tool checks the window before it sends.

Can an automation use the human agent tag?

No. The tag lets a person reply up to 7 days after the person’s last message, for human support only. It also needs Meta’s approval: the Human Agent permission, granted in App Review.

How can I see how much time I have left?

DM Flow shows a window ring on every conversation in its Instagram DM inbox. The ring empties as the 24 hours run out, so you can see who needs an answer first.
