Instagram DM automation: the complete guide for 2026
Instagram DM automation sends a DM for you when someone comments or messages your account. This guide explains what can start an automated DM, the rules Meta sets, the free and paid ways to automate, and how to set up your first automation.

What Instagram DM automation is
Instagram DM automation is software that sends direct messages for your account. It reacts to something a person does, such as a comment with a keyword or a DM with a question. It never starts a conversation on its own.
Here is a typical case. You post a reel with the caption “Comment PRICE for the details.” Ana comments “price” at 10:00 on Monday. Your automation spots the keyword and sends Ana one DM with the price and a link. Ana answers: “Do you ship to Berlin?” Now you have a real conversation.
- 1Ana comments “price” under your reel.
- 2Instagram tells your tool about the new comment.
- 3Your tool checks the rules, then sends Ana one private reply.
- 4Ana answers your DM. The 24-hour window opens.
The same idea works for DMs. When someone writes “price?” or “size chart”, a keyword automation sends the answer at any hour. You still read every conversation and step in when a person is needed.
What can start an automated DM
An automation can only react to events Instagram tells it about. Instagram sends these events to connected apps as webhooks. Meta’s documentation lists what an app can hear about:
- Comments on your posts and reels.
- Live comments, during an Instagram Live.
- Mentions of your account.
- DMs that people send you. A reply to your story arrives as a DM too.
- Other chat events: reactions to messages, reads, taps on buttons, and chats that people open from a link or an ad.
There is no public event for new followers, so most tools, DM Flow included, cannot send a welcome DM when someone follows you. Meta tests an exception with a few partners: ManyChat lists a Follow to DM beta, where Meta decides which accounts get it. Read whether you can auto DM new followers on Instagram and what works instead.
Nothing lets a business message strangers either. You cannot DM a list, the followers of another account or people found by hashtag. Every automated DM must answer something the person did first.
Comments have two more conditions. The tool needs a level of access Meta calls Advanced Access. And the account that owns the post must be public: Meta says private accounts do not receive comment or mention notifications. So if your account is private, comment automations stay silent.
DM Flow answers two of these events: comments on posts and reels, with Instagram comment to DM, and DMs, with keyword auto-replies.
The rules every automation must follow
Meta sets the rules, and they are the same for every tool. Here they are in brief. Our guide to Instagram DM automation rules covers each one with examples and a checklist.
- The 24-hour window. You can message a person for 24 hours after their last message. Each new message from them restarts the clock. A comment does not open the window. See how the 24-hour messaging window works.
- One private reply per comment. You can answer a comment with one DM, within 7 days. You can send more only after the person replies. See Instagram private replies.
- No cold messages. Message only people who wrote to you or commented first.
- Official API only. Use a tool that connects through Instagram’s own login. Never give a tool your password.
- 1,000 bytes per message. That is about 1,000 English letters, but fewer with emoji, because most emoji take 4 bytes each.
- Rate limits. Meta’s documentation lists limits per account, such as 750 private replies per hour on posts and reels. Normal accounts never reach them. Our guide to Instagram DM limits explains the real numbers and the myths.
- Human agent replies. With Meta’s approval, a person (not automation) may reply up to 7 days after the person’s last message.
- Disclosure. Say that replies are automated where the law requires it, for example in California and Germany.
Breaking a rule does not get a message through: Instagram returns an error instead of delivering it. Good tools check the rules before they send.
Three ways to automate Instagram DMs
1. Meta’s free Inbox automations
Meta Business Suite has free automations for Instagram business accounts connected to it. You find them under Inbox, then Automations. They include an auto reply (a greeting for someone’s first message), an away message, frequently asked questions, custom keywords and comment to message. Comment to message sends a DM when a comment contains your keywords or phrases.
They cost nothing and come from Meta, so they are a sensible first step. They also have limits:
- Keyword automations and comment to message work only on desktop.
- A custom keyword automation takes up to five keywords. Meta says keywords are case-sensitive and must match exactly.
- Meta sends a keyword reply to a message after 15 minutes, unless you reply yourself first.
- If an away message or another template also matches, Meta sends only the template reply.
- Meta notes that some messaging features are not available to businesses in Europe and Japan.
Our step-by-step guide shows how to set up auto reply on Instagram with these free tools, and when a paid tool is worth it.
2. Tools on Instagram’s official API
Tools such as DM Flow and ManyChat connect through Instagram’s official login and use the same API. They answer comments and DMs by keyword and add their own features on top.
DM Flow keeps it simple: comment to DM, keyword auto-replies and one Instagram DM inbox that shows how long you have left to reply. A keyword can match anywhere in a message, the whole message or its start. Capitals do not count unless you choose. DM Flow adds no waiting period before it sends.
ManyChat does much more, with a visual flow builder, many triggers, broadcasts, integrations and other channels. Read our honest ManyChat alternative comparison, see what ManyChat costs, or compare the best Instagram DM automation tools side by side.
3. Bots that log in with your password
Some tools ask for your Instagram username and password. They log in as you and click around. Tools that promise what the API does not allow, such as DMs to strangers, have to work this way. It breaks Instagram’s terms and can get your account restricted. Use a tool that connects through Instagram’s official login instead.
Meta Business Suite or DM Flow?
If you mostly need comment replies and keyword answers, these are the two simplest options. Here is how they compare, based on Meta’s help pages and DM Flow’s features.
| Meta Business Suite | DM Flow | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Sign up without a card |
| Where you set it up | Meta Business Suite; keyword automations on desktop only | DM Flow, in your browser |
| Reply to comments with a DM | Yes, with comment to message | Yes, on one post or reel, several or all of them |
| Keyword replies to DMs | Yes, up to five keywords per automation | Yes, with no limit on keywords |
| How keywords match | Exactly, and capitals count | Anywhere in the message, the whole message or its start; capitals count only if you choose |
| When a keyword reply to a DM goes out | After 15 minutes, unless you reply first | No waiting period |
| Greeting, away message and FAQs | Yes | No |
| What a reply can contain | Text, photos, videos, buttons and links | Text and links; no buttons |
| Channels | Facebook Pages, Instagram and WhatsApp Business | Instagram only |
Meta’s tools are a fine start for a greeting, an away message or a few exact keywords. DM Flow suits accounts that get many keyword comments and questions, and that want replies to go out without a wait.
Do not let two tools answer the same comments
A comment allows only one private reply. If two tools answer the same comment, the second reply fails. If you use both, give each tool its own job, such as Meta’s away message and DM Flow’s comment to DM.
What to automate first
Start with the messages you write again and again. These five are a good order:
- “Comment for the link” on reels. Ask people to comment a word, then send the link in a DM. Our guide to comment for link on Instagram has caption and message examples.
- Keyword comments. Reply to “price” or “size” comments with a private DM. Learn how to auto reply to Instagram comments.
- Common questions in DMs. Prices, sizes, shipping and opening hours get the same answer every time. Set them up as Instagram auto replies by keyword.
- A greeting and an away message. Meta’s free tools handle these well.
- The conversations that follow. Answer follow-up questions yourself, before the 24-hour window closes, in an Instagram DM inbox for business.
How to start with DM Flow in five steps
- Use a Business or Creator account. You can switch for free in the Instagram app. Keep the account public: Instagram does not send comment notifications for private accounts.
- Sign in and connect Instagram. Sign in with Google, then connect your account through Instagram’s official login. You log in on Instagram’s own page, so DM Flow never sees your password.
- Create an automation. Pick comment to DM or a keyword auto-reply. Choose the posts, add keywords such as “price” or “link”, and write the message. A live phone preview shows what people will see, and the editor counts bytes for you.
- Test it from a second account you own. Comment your keyword or send it in a DM. Do not test on a customer’s comment: your test would use up its one private reply.
- Watch the results. Analytics shows messages in, replies sent, failed and the share delivered, for 7, 30 or 90 days and for each automation. Answer follow-ups in the inbox before the window closes.

Common mistakes
- Giving a tool your password. Use only tools that connect through Instagram’s official login.
- Expecting to DM strangers or new followers. The public API does not allow it, apart from Meta’s limited Follow to DM beta. Automations answer comments and messages.
- A private account. Comment automations stay silent, because Instagram does not send comment notifications for private accounts.
- Keywords that are too short. When a keyword can match anywhere in a message, “hi” also matches “this”. Use clear words such as “price” or “link”.
- Testing on real comments. Each comment allows one private reply. Test with a second account you own.
- Long messages full of emoji. The limit is 1,000 bytes, and most emoji take 4 bytes each.
- Following up too late. After 24 hours without a message from the person, no normal message can go out. Answer while the window is open.
- Forgetting message requests. People who do not follow you may find your reply in their message requests. Say so in your caption.
