Comment for link on Instagram: how to send links by DM

Comment for link on Instagram means people comment a keyword, such as LINK, and get your link in a DM. Here is how to set it up, with captions and replies you can copy, and the rules Instagram sets.

Why comment for link works

A link in a DM is one tap away, in a place people check every day. The other places for a link ask more of people:

  • Your bio. Instagram lets you add up to 5 websites to your profile. To use one, people leave your reel, open your profile and find the right link.
  • Links in Reels. Instagram lists links in Reels as a Meta Verified benefit with a monthly cap: 2, 4 or 6 a month, depending on the plan.

Comment for link also helps you, not only your followers:

  • Every request is a conversation. The link arrives as a DM. When the person answers, the 24-hour window opens, and you can help them choose, book or buy.
  • You see who is interested. Each comment shows you one more person who wants what you posted.

How it works

From comment to link, step by step
StepWhat happens
1Ana comments “link please” under your reel.
2Instagram tells your tool about the new comment.
3The tool sees the keyword “link”, checks Instagram’s rules and sends Ana one private reply with the link.
4Ana taps the link. If she answers the DM, the 24-hour window opens and you can keep talking.

Set it up in DM Flow

  1. Use an Instagram Business or Creator account, and keep it public. Instagram does not send comment notifications for private accounts.
  2. Sign in to DM Flow with Google, then connect your account through Instagram’s official login. You log in on Instagram’s own page.
  3. Go to Automations and click New automation, then choose Comment on a post. Or open Posts and click Add automation on the post you want.
  4. Choose the post or reel. You can pick several, or turn on Any post or reel to listen on every post, including the ones you share later.
  5. Add your keyword, such as “link” or “guide”. With Contains the keyword, “link please” and “LINK” both match, because capitals do not count unless you choose.
  6. Write the reply with your link. The editor counts bytes against Instagram’s limit of 1,000 and shows a live phone preview.
  7. Check that the switch says Live, then click Publish. Do it before you post: DM Flow answers comments as they arrive.
  8. Test with a comment from a second account you own. Do not test on a real follower’s comment, because your test would use up its one private reply.

Caption templates you can copy

A good caption names the keyword in capitals, says what people get and tells them where to look. Here are seven to start from:

  • “Comment LINK and I’ll send it to your DMs.”
  • “Want the full recipe? Comment RECIPE and check your DMs and message requests.”
  • “Comment GUIDE for my free 10-page packing guide.”
  • “Comment SHOP and I’ll DM you the links to everything in this reel.”
  • “Comment SIZE for the size chart in your DMs.”
  • “Comment BOOK to get the booking link for Saturday’s class in your DMs.”
  • “Comment PLAN for my free 5-day plan. New here? Check your message requests.”

Pick a keyword people will not type by accident. “Link” and “guide” work well. A very short word such as “hi” matches too much, because it also appears inside “this”.

Reply templates that start a conversation

You get one message per comment, so put the link in it and end with a question. A question invites an answer, and the answer opens the 24-hour window.

For a link

“Here you go! The link from the reel: example.com/start. Do you want the beginner or the advanced version?”

For a free guide

“Thanks for commenting! Here is your free packing guide: example.com/guide. Where are you travelling next?”

For products

“Here are the links to everything in the reel: example.com/reel-12. Which piece caught your eye first?”

For a booking

“Saturday classes start at 10:00 and cost €45. Book here: example.com/book. Is this your first class?”

Each template fits easily in 1,000 bytes. Most emoji take 4 bytes each, so keep them few. Put the link on its own, without words stuck to it, so it is easy to tap.

The rules Instagram sets

  • One private reply per comment. A second private reply to the same comment fails. If the person comments again, the new comment allows a new reply.
  • Within 7 days. After 7 days, Instagram refuses the private reply.
  • More messages only after an answer. A comment does not open the 24-hour window, and neither does your private reply. The person’s answer does. See how the Instagram 24-hour window works.
  • Message requests. The reply goes to the person’s inbox if they follow you, and to their message requests if they do not.
  • Public accounts only. Instagram tells apps about new comments only when the account that owns the post is public.
  • 1,000 bytes per message. Long messages with many emoji may not fit.

DM Flow checks the 7-day limit before it sends, never sends twice when Instagram repeats a notification, and sends at most 700 private replies per hour per account, under the 750 per hour that Meta’s documentation lists for posts and reels. Extra replies wait their turn and go out within the 7 days.

The free option from Meta

Meta Business Suite has a free automation called Comment to message. It sends a message reply to comments on your posts that contain the keywords or phrases you choose. It works only in Meta Business Suite on desktop.

  1. Open Meta Business Suite on a computer.
  2. Go to Inbox, then click Automations.
  3. Click Create automation, then choose Comment to message.
  4. Follow the steps on the screen and turn it on.

It is a good way to try comment for link for free. DM Flow gives you three keyword match types with capitals ignored by default, the posts you pick or every post and reel, replies sent and delivered for each automation, and one inbox that shows the time left to reply. Our guide to Instagram comment auto reply compares the options.

Measure the results

In DM Flow, Analytics shows messages in, replies sent, failed and the share delivered, for 7, 30 or 90 days and for each automation. The automations list shows each automation’s replies for the last 30 days.

  • Compare reels. Use one automation per reel, so you can see which reel brought the most requests.
  • Count the clicks on your side. DM Flow does not count link clicks. Add a tracking tag to your link, such as ?utm_source=instagram, and read the visits in your website’s analytics.
  • Read the answers. The best results come from the people who write back. Answer them in your Instagram DM inbox before the window closes.

Mistakes to avoid

Turning the automation on too late

DM Flow answers comments as they arrive. Turn the automation on before you post, so the first comments get the link too.

Not mentioning message requests

People who do not follow you get the reply in their message requests. Add “check your message requests” to the caption, or many will never see it.

Testing on a real comment

Each comment allows one private reply. A test on a follower’s comment uses it up. Test from a second account you own.

Two tools on the same post

If two tools answer the same comment, the second reply fails. Use one tool for each post.

A broken or buried link

Open the link on your phone before you publish. Put it near the start of the message, not after a long paragraph.

Frequently asked questions

Is “comment for link” allowed on Instagram?

Yes, when the tool uses Instagram’s official API. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment. Our guide to Instagram private replies explains the rules.

Why did someone not get the link?

Check five things. Is your account public? Is the automation Live and listening on that post? Does the comment contain your keyword? Did the comment arrive before you turned the automation on? Did another tool already send the one private reply? Also ask people who do not follow you to look in their message requests.

Can I send the link to people who commented before I set it up?

Instagram allows a private reply only within 7 days of the comment. DM Flow answers comments as they arrive, so turn the automation on before you post, or as soon as you can.

Can I make people follow me before they get the link?

Not with DM Flow: it has no follow-gate. It sends your link to everyone whose comment matches your keyword.

Does it work on reels and on posts?

Yes. A DM Flow comment automation can listen on one post or reel, on several, or on every post and reel with Any post or reel.

Can the DM have a button?

DM Flow sends text, with your link inside the text. It has no buttons. Keep the link short and put it on its own line, so it is easy to tap.
